Producers surveying a freshly covered chinampa bed

The Project

A bridge, not a founder

What we are — and are not

The Chinampa Project did not create chinampa restoration. Ruta Lacustre, Etiqueta Chinampera and the producer networks existed before it; the chinamperos have been cultivating and restoring for generations.

The Chinampa Project is a collaborative bridging initiative: it connects that existing ecosystem — producers, restoration science, agricultural production, Mexican market infrastructure — with companies, institutions, expertise, technical solutions and sustained market demand.

Its purpose is not to replace local knowledge. It is to reinforce the conditions under which that knowledge, production system and ecological restoration remain viable.

The problem

Not a lack of admiration

The chinampas are widely admired. What threatens them is an interconnected challenge: ecological degradation of water and soil, weak and fragmented market access, producer profitability too low to plan on, labour and generational transition, and demand too unstable to justify reactivating abandoned plots.

A critical lesson from the project's first phase: interest is not the same as commitment. Individual basket subscriptions generated significant interest but insufficient recurring demand. The strategy evolved — from individual purchasing to structured corporate demand: longer-term purchasing commitments, B2B channels and strategic partnerships that give producers genuine planning predictability.

The regenerative economic loop

The strongest argument on this site

When demand is predictable, production is viable; when production is viable, income stabilises; when income stabilises, cultivation continues; when cultivation continues, restoration happens — and measurable restoration is what brings stronger participation back into the loop.

The existing ecosystem

What was already here

Chinamperos / producers. The human and agricultural centre: they cultivate, steward knowledge, maintain the production system and carry out restoration. Several are certified under Etiqueta Chinampera.

Ruta Lacustre. An operating chinampero network across Xochimilco and San Gregorio Atlapulco: productive activity, fairer commercialisation, local economic strengthening, restoration and intergenerational knowledge transmission.

Etiqueta Chinampera / UNAM. The ecological and scientific backbone — agricultural practice, water, soil, biodiversity, restoration and traceability.

NUMU Market. Full commercial and logistics partner: aggregation, commercialisation and distribution. Individual-order infrastructure is live; a corporate B2B mechanism is under development.

Supported institutionally by Business Sweden / Team Sweden — credibility, corporate mobilisation, international relationships — and by the Nordic Chamber for networking, communications and events. Neither owns the initiative; the producers' agency comes first.

Principles

Four commitments

  • Cultural respect. Traditional knowledge grounded in natural systems comes first; technology follows when it genuinely serves the system.
  • Community ownership. Chinamperos control their own development.
  • Ecological regeneration. Every intervention must heal the land.
  • Economic justice. Fair returns for chinamperas and chinamperos; sustainable livelihoods for families.

SDG alignment

The mechanism behind each goal

  • SDG 1 · No poverty — stable prices and recurring demand convert cultivation into dependable income.
  • SDG 2 · Zero hunger — highly productive regenerative agriculture close to the city it feeds.
  • SDG 5 · Gender equality — resources, training and market access for women reactivating family chinampas.
  • SDG 12 · Responsible consumption & production — traceable, certified, low-input food chains.
  • SDG 13 · Climate action — wetland soils that store carbon and a food system with minimal footprint.

Evolution

How the strategy has learned

  1. Formation — Business Sweden explores concrete SDG contribution in Mexico
  2. Connection with NUMU Market and the producer ecosystem
  3. Market model design
  4. Corporate outreach begins
  5. Individual basket pilot — from individual purchasing to structured corporate demand
  6. Field brigades — interest becomes relationship
  7. Nordic Chamber joins the mobilisation
  8. Corporate partnership model
  9. 2026 activation strategy

The bridge is built. What crosses it is up to the companies that choose to participate.
