A canal comes back to work

A canal that has silted up is not a lost canal. It is a job. The workday starts early: planks across the mud, buckets, a canoa loaded with sacks, and the slow rhythm of dredging — lifting the black lake mud back onto the bed it built in the first place.

By midday the water is moving again along a stretch that had stood still for years. The mud goes back to the bed; the bed will grow the next season's food; the food will pay for the next stretch of canal. That is the whole system, in one morning's work.
