"Where ancient wisdom meets modern sustainability."
Of the 20,922 existing chinampas, only 17% are active, from which a significant percentage could be reactivated…
Through the preservation of ancient wisdom, paired with modern sustainability efforts, we can work together to increase this systemic activity
Welcome to Chinampas Regeneration in Xochimilco
Together with local communities and international allies, we are reviving one of the world’s most ingenious agricultural systems: the chinampa. Rooted in pre-Hispanic tradition and reimagined for a sustainable future, this initiative merges ancestral knowledge with today’s ecological needs.
Who We Are
We are a collaborative network of Mexican agricultural communities, Swedish sustainability experts, academics, researchers, and environmental advocates united by a common vision: to regenerate abandoned chinampas and empower rural chinampera women through agroecology, ethical trade, and knowledge exchange; transforming traditional farming systems into models of regenerative agriculture that benefit both people and planet.
Our stated purpose is for civil society, academia, and chinamperos to join forces in restoring these ecological systems, and sustain the communities that tend to them, through a holistic, multifaceted structural model.
What We Do
We restore and enhance the productivity of the chinampas found in San Gregorio Atlapulco and its surroundings, improving local livelihoods, promoting gender equality, fostering respectful technology transfer, community empowerment, sustainable market development, and raising awareness about regenerative farming practices that help fight climate change.
Our Values
- Cultural Respect: Traditional knowledge grounded in natural systems is in the forefront, technology follows
- Community Ownership: Chinamperos control their own development
- Ecological Regeneration: Every intervention must heal the land
- Economic Justice: Fair returns for chinamperas, sustainable livelihoods for families
